Newest addition
The latest to join the Army's rank of Majors General is Brigadier G.A. Chandrasiri, currently Director General - General Staff in the Joint Operations Headquarters.

He is due to leave for New Delhi next month for a year long stint at India's National Defence College (NDC). Also going for the same course is Sri Lanka Navy's Commodore Tissera Samarasinghe. now Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of Defence Staff at the JOH.

On December 8, Army Headquarters also announced a series of relinquishment/appointments. A note by Brigadier N.R. Witharanage, officiating Military Secretary says:

Major General Chula Seneviratne to relinquish office as Chief of Staff from December 9. He has already left the Army and is due to be named Director of the Directorate of Foreign Intelligence (DFI).

Major General Sarath Fonseka to relinquish appointment as Chief of Staff of the Army and appointed Chief of Staff with effect from December 9. He is succeeded by Major General Susil Chandrapala.

Maj. Gen. Fonseka is currently on a private visit to the United States. He is due to return to Sri Lanka only next month. Major General Nanda Mallawaratchi to relinquish office as Commander, Security Forces Headquarters (East). He has been appointed as Commandant of the Sri Lanka Volunteer Force. He will also overlook duties of the Director General-General Staff. Maj. Gen. Gamini Hettiaratchi is to succeed him in the East.

Maj. Gen. Nissanka Wijesinghe who was at Army Headquarters has been named as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army's 21 Division.

Training to fly
Foreign intelligence circles are buzzing with reports about a group of Tiger guerrillas, said to be around five or six, undergoing training to fly light aircraft abroad.

Some of the young men had a rendezvous with senior members of an LTTE team that went on an European tour recently.

The reports come in the backdrop of Tiger guerrillas training in the use of microlight aircraft to attack targets in the City. This includes suicide attacks.
