GMOA
wants CBK to intervene
By Apsara Kapukotuwa
The Government Medical Officers Association has once
again appealed to the President to personally intervene to avoid
a "major calamity in the medical profession".
Stating
that the Sri Lanka Medical Council is being pressurised by a group
of lawyers to accept a "bogus qualification," the GMOA
calls on the SLMC not to succumb to the dictates of the lawyers
and strictly abide by the court order. The Supreme Court on September
23 , dismissed the two appeals filed by the Sri Lanka Medical Council
seeking to set aside the Court of Appeal judgment directing the
Council to recognize the MD medical degree awarded to RMOs and AMOs
by the St. Petersburg State Medical Academy of Russia.
The
usual Medical Degree that is recognised by the SLMC has a duration
of 6 years which was bypassed by the Registered Medical Officers
citing the training obtained to gain registration as an RMO and
their work experience. GMOA spokesman Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya said
when investigations were made regarding the Russian Higher Education
Institute, it was discovered the given location was a filling station
with a hall on the upper floor of the building used for training.
He questioned as to how training here could be deemed to be equal
to proper clinical medical training gained at a Teaching Hospital
affiliated to a Medical Faculty.
The
GMOA went on to say that it believes it would be more advisable
for the SLMC to resign en masse rather than give full registration
to a group of RMOs who "purportedly studied medicine for 3
years". |
