Doctors
left out of medical conference

The Health Minister's decision to nominate participants
who do not posses a medical background, for the Asian Medical Parliamentarians
Conference has been criticised by Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena.
This
conference is to be held on December 14 and 15, in Malaysia. The
topics to be discussed will be on the Millennium Development Goals
proclaimed by the UN and their relation to Health and Development
Policy, Women's Health, HIV and what Medical Parliamentarians can
do. Experts from the WHO and other Agencies will also participate
at this conference.
"
The Health Minister has not nominated a single medical Parliamentarian
for this conference, even though there are several medical Parliamentarians
in Parliament" said Dr. Jayawardena.
"Prof.
Tissa Vitharana, who is a senior medical consultant, is a medical
Parliamentarian from the ruling party. Dr. Rajitha Senaratne and
I are medical Parliamentarians from the Opposition and both of us
are founder members of the International Medical Parliamentarians
Organization (IMPO)," he said.
Meanwhile,
Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said, " The IMPO requested
the Health Ministry to nominate participants to the Asian Medical
Parliamentarians Conference. I as the Health Minister chose people
who are connected to the health sector."
The
participants selected are Healthcare and Nutrition Deputy Minister
Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Minister
Pavithra Wanniarachchi and Indigenous Medicine Minister Tissa Karaliyadde.
"
Dr. Jayawardena had verbally requested he be selected as an observer
participant. If he really would want to participate, he should have
requested it in writing. Then I would have been able to consider
his request" said Minister De Silva. |
