Attack on Jaffna transmitter threat to freedom of expression, claims FMM
The Free Media Movement (FMM) condemned the attack on the MTV/MBC Network's Transmission Station in Jaffna as yet another threat to freedom of expression in Sri Lanka.

The station was located on the second floor of the Weerasinham Hall in Jaffna-Kankesanthurai Road. A gang of four to six persons wearing helmets allegedly came on motorbikes, entered the building around 9.10 pm on December 6 and destroyed the station's equipment. The damage caused was estimated at around Rs. 10 million.

The transmitting station was well within the government-controlled area and the attackers who fled the scene had not been identified as yet or any arrests made.

"This attack not only violates the democratic rights of the MTV/MBC Network but also the right to information of the war-torn Jaffna peninsula’s people. The FMM's main concern is the people's right to information. The FMM condemns this attack on these grounds", said FMM spokesman Sunanda Deshapriya.

"At the same time the FMM urges the government to initiate an impartial and speedy inquiry into this incident and to provide adequate security to MTV/MBC Network's transmission station in Jaffna", added Mr. Deshapriya.
