Ratwatte
faces Wednesday deadline
Former PA strongman Anuruddha Ratwatte has three more days to show
cause why he should not be indicted on charges of failing to account
for certificates of deposits amounting to millions of rupees.
The
Commission investigating allegations of bribery and corruption has
given him time till December 14 when the term of office of the current
commission also expires. Earlier Mr. Ratwatte was given two extensions
of one month each to explain how he amassed Rs. 45 million as certificates
of deposits in secret vaults of a private bank. Outgoing Commission
member Dr. Kingsley Wickramasuriya defended the extensions given
to Mr. Ratwatte, saying similar concessions were given to S. B.
Dissanayake before charges were filed against him on Friday. Mr.
Wickramasuriya said the new commission would have to decide on Mr.
Ratwatte's case. |
