Straight
from the heart
By Marisa de Silva
Romesh Kaluwitharana has donated some of his cricketing
gear, Sanath Jayasuriya a bat and Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda
Vaas are both contributing a ball each.
The
celebrity contributions are for the 'Heart Beat 2004' project being
held for the third consecutive year with an international auction
as a fundraiser. The Heart Beat project is a special mission, where
'Save the Child Surgery Mercy Mission of Sri Lanka' together with
the expertise of Conal Austin FRCS, and his team from the Guy's
Hospital UK, perform heart surgery on children, free of charge,
at the Karapitiya Hospital, Galle.
The
UK team led by Mr. Austin will be in the country from January 22-30,
2005. “Through this project we hope not only to do operations
but also to educate doctors in the field to handle acute cases as
we want local doctors to take it over in a few years' time,"
said project coordinator Mr. Zuhair Ibrahim.
The
organisers plan to open the auction on December 21 to the international
market and keep the bidding open for three days.
