Janashakthi and Seylan take top slots

The Mercantile League Netball Tournament 2004 organized
by the Mercantile Amateur Athletic Association (Netball Section)
and sponsored by Masons Mixture Ltd and Nippon Paints (Singapore)
Co Pvt Ltd got underway yesterday morning at the BRC grounds with
16 teams participating in the three divisions.
The
'A' division had two teams Hatton National Bank the defending champions
and Sampath Bank. The 'C' division consisted of two groups with
Janashakthi, HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank while the 'B' consisted
four teams Access Group, David Peiris, Seylan Bank and Ceylinco
Group. The mixed division also consisted of two groups with David
Peiris, Ceylinco Group, HNB and HSBC in the 'A" group and Seylan
Bank, Sampath Bank and Access in the 'B' group.
The
tournament was declared opened by chief guest Priyanjula Guruge
at 8.30 a.m. and was followed by the first match of the day between
Janashakthi and Standard Chartered Bank which was a 'A' group in
the 'C' division that ended in a easy 26 points to 9 win for Janashakthi.
The winners went on to record their second win defeating HSBC by
22 points to six. In another match of the same group Standard Chartered
Bank registered a thrilling 26-24 win over HSBC, Janashakthi with
two wins finished on top in their group with Standard Chartered
Bank in second.
In
the 'B' group of the same division Seylan Bank and David Peiris
won their matches against Access Group and Ceylinco Group by 29
points to 14 and 20 points to 15 respectively. In the 'A' group
of the mixed division Ceylinco Group beat David Peiris narrowly
by 16 points to 15 and HNB beat HSBC by 21 points to 6. In the 'B'
group of the same division Seylan Bank recorded two wins over Access
Group by 26 points to three and Sampath Bank by 16 points to 11
finish on top while Sampath Bank beat Access by 17 points to 1 finished
second.
The
tournament had to be called off at 4.00 p.m. due to bad weather
with some of the first round matches yet to be played and will continued
today from 8.30 a.m. onwards. |
