Funds
pour in for tsunami victims from Down Under
It seems that the entire civilised world is coming into terms with
the enormity of the disaster that hit Sri Lanka and its neighbours
and thus how vulnerable the entire world is against the power of
nature.
This
morning we here down under woke up to the news that the establishment
of cricket was planning to host a charity match for the tsunami
victims. Frantic negotiations were going on Friday across the cricketing
world in a bid to stage Rest of the World vs Australia match in
Australia in January to raise money for this cause.
Federation
of International Cricketers Chief Executive Tim May set the ball
rolling by sending out a proposal to all world player associations
asking them if they would like to support a game which would likely
be held in Melbourne on January 12. It is told that if the game
is held it will raise millions of dollars for the much needed cause.
The
cricketers who will not appear in this game will be the players
from England and South Africa who are at present engaged in a gruelling
battle of their own.
In
the meantime the Australian team who won the second Test and the
series rubber against Pakistan donated their match winning money
of $(Australian) 17,000 to the Tsunami victims. In incidents other
than cricket the city of Townsville cancelled their new-year fire
works celebrations and donated the money to the victims. Here in
Brisbane the fireworks went on, but the revellers are planning to
dig deep into their pockets towards the victim fund in a move they
say that could raise more funds than just canceling the fireworks
and giving that money to the tsunami victims.
The
incident has jolted the citizens of Australia. At present there
are many people who are coming forward and inquiring as to how they
could directly send in help to people in Sri Lanka.
It
is also speculated that some of the players who headed back home
will come over to Australia to take part in the charity match if
they are invited. |
