Lankans
in Britain mourn deaths of relatives

A Sri Lankan Muslim named Riaz, working for the Tesco
supermarket chain is said to have lost more than 40 of his relatives
in Kalmunai to the December 26 tsunami.
The
Tesco management is said to have told him he could take some leave
if necessary and assured he would receive his salary, another Sri
Lankan employee with Tesco, told the Sunday Times.
Meanwhile,
a person of Sri Lankan origin, Mercy Thilagarajan, who moved to
England in 1993, has lost 32 of her relatives in the same disaster,
The Guardian reported on Friday. The Batticaloa-born Ms Thilagarajan,
35, a shopkeeper in Ashford, Kent, is quoted as saying, "I
felt helpless. I couldn't do anything. I was watching TV all the
day and I was losing my mind. It is terrible to lose so many people,
terrible."
Another
person from Batticaloa who believes he has lost some 20 close and
distant relatives is Velupillai Srikantha, a builder from Barr Road,
Batticaloa. He said that his uncle and relatives were living in
houses close to each other. The houses have been demolished and
their occupants dead or missing. |
