Tit-for-tat killings continue in East
By Chris Kamalendran
Suspected LTTE cadres shot dead a Karuna group loyalist and seriously injured an army informant in separate incidents in Batticaloa yesterday, military officials said. In what appeared to be an immediate retaliation, an LTTE member was killed at Mankerny last afternoon.

The Karuna group loyalist was killed at Vanthaarumoolai in Batticaloa shortly before noon. He was identified as Mylvaganam Pulenthiran, 26. The other man, a PLOTE member was shot when he was leaving his house at hospital road on his way to the People's Bank. He was flown to Colombo by the Air Force for treatment.

Police said a lone gunman had fired at him thrice and fled. They said the army informant Kandiah Ganeshalingam and his family were living under police protection along with other PLOTE cadres in Batticaloa town and had been advised not to leave the premises without police protection.

However, Mr. Ganeshan yesterday left the premises without informing the police. Batticaloa's Acting Police Superintendent A.M. Keeragala said since many PLOTE cadres were facing threats to their lives, two police guards had been given for each PLOTE cadre.

About 40 PLOTE members and their families were living under police protection in the Batticaloa party office and the adjoining building, SP Keeragala said.
