Okay
for Disaster Bill
Parliament is set to approve the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Bill
on Wednesday with several amendments proposed by both the Government
and the Opposition.
The
approval of the Bill which was presented as an urgent Bill to the
Legislature on February 24 to be passed the same day was delayed
as Opposition members said such a Bill needed to be passed with
a consensus of the whole House and should not be rushed through.
The
Bill among other things provides for the establishment of a national
council for disaster management and the preparation of disaster
management plans for the country to deal with both natural and man-made
disasters.
Some
of the disaster covered by the Bill are landslides, cyclones, earthquakes,
fires and industrial hazards, epidemics, explosions, air raids and
civil and internal strife.
Meanwhile,
the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, which seeks to increase
the number of Appeal Court judges and also set up provincial Appeal
Court circuits, is to be approved on Thursday. |
