‘Musicians
for the people- the one trust’
Woodstock style Concert, the biggest event in Sri Lanka’s
music history, will come alive on Friday, April 1 and Saturday,
April 2 at the Race Course Grounds in Colombo.
In
a colossal, hitherto unprecedented effort, the entire musicians’
fraternity of Sri Lanka, Western and Oriental (Sinhala and Tamil)
has joined hands to present a mega, blockbuster, two-day concert,
in order to raise funds for long – term relief for children
affected by the tsunami catastrophe.
Titled
‘MUSICIANS FOR THE PEOPLE – The ONE Trust’, the
concert will be held on two segments. The Western music concert
will be held on April 1 and Saturday, April 2 will be the day for
the Oriental Music fans.
It
will continue from 7.00 p.m. until dawn on both days with the participation
of nearly all of the professional musicians of Sri Lanka, performing
on a complimentary basis for this worthy cause.
The
Western Concert will feature 35 bands and 25 solo artistes from
a variety of musical genres – pop, rock, retro, R & B,
rap, country, fusion etc. The Oriental concert will feature nearly
100 solo artistes, and 8 core, backing bands. Leading dance troupes
and guest appearances by popular Sri Lankan personalities will additionally
enhance both shows.
‘All
the musicians and artistes, when they were contacted about this
concert, were spontaneous in their agreement to make their contribution
towards tsunami relief, although, the musicians as a whole were
also indirectly affected by the tsunami because understandably,
following this disaster, entertainment was cut down’ said
singer Noeline Honter, who took the lead in organizing this event.
‘We
are now in the process of setting up a website, where all the details
of the concert and other related information will be featured. The
website will include a page for online contributions particularly
from musicians living overseas such as photographs, and future events.
Once the concert is held, a detailed report of accounts will also
be included on the website. The website is www. musiciansforthepeople.com.
The
ONE Trust is conceptualized by Cargills. Its mission is ”To
work as ONE united Sri Lanka to make a significant contribution
to the Nation Rebuilding effort through Sustainable Economic Development.”
MUSICIANS FOR THE PEOPLE has partnered with The ONE Trust, who also
shares the same vision for Sri Lanka. The entire seed money for
the concert is being donated by The ONE Trust.
The
total proceeds of the concert, will be utilized to provide urgently
required educational facilities for affected schools and school
children in the Ampara Mullaitivu and Hambantota districts, with
the main focus on primary education. In addition, assistance will
also be given to certain schools in the Galle district, which have
