Mobs
block Army camps, set fire to sentry points
Tension ran high in Chavakachcheri yesterday after angry mobs blocked
Sri Lanka Army camps and set fire to two sentry points, injuring
four persons. Military traffic on the A9 highway through Chavakachcheri
was also stopped by a demonstration against the obstruction of a
peaceful protest over an earlier accident where a civilian was hit
and injured.
TNA
Parliamentarian N. Raviraj said he rushed to the scene yesterday
and met the protestors, the security forces and Police and that
the situation had normalised by evening. Chavakachcheri residents
allege that the Police and the Military attacked civilians and damaged
property during Friday's protests and hence the troubles had continued.
Friday's
clashes between civilians and the Army came days after a similar
incident where people went on the rampage after a student was killed
by by a military vehicle in Jaffna. |
