Peter
Harrold says sorry
World Bank Country Director Peter Harrold said on Friday he was
"sorry" if his interview in The Sunday Times last week
had caused "any misunderstanding" as he tried to deflect
mounting criticism over remarks made by him regarding the Bank's
policy on recognizing the LTTE.
He
admitted in a second statement during the week that he may not have
spoken "very clearly" during his interview. He said any
"reasonable person could have misunderstood" him.
This
second statement followed an earlier statement (on Monday) where
he said The Sunday Times had "misquoted" him. He said
he had seen to it that audio excerpts of the interview were posted
on the World Bank website.
This
seven-minute audio, The Sunday Times found, tallied with its own
tape recording and proved wrong the claims made by Mr. Harrold that
he used the words "official statement" and not "an
unofficial state."
The
second statement came after Mr. Harrold's request to come to terms
with The Sunday Times" to prevent the publication of the transcript
of the interview was turned down.
