WHO
team in Badulla probing mystery disease
By Apsara Kapukotuwa
With the cause of myocarditis in Badulla still a
mystery, the World Health Organization is taking the forefront in
investigations in consultation with local epidemiologists.
However,
the number of reported cases for the past week has shown a marked
decrease from the week before. Uva Provincial Director of Health
Dr. Shelton Chandrasiri said the outbreak has probably now reached
its peak or mid-level, in keeping with the usual pattern of an epidemic.
He
further said the number of patients has declined in the past three
days. The number of patients on record at present is 273 though
only 238 fall under the 'definite' and 'probable' category.
Dr.
(Mrs.) L.M. Ponrajah, acting Medical Superintendent of the Badulla
Hospital said that the World Health Organization team that arrived
in Badulla on Friday would continue its investigations for a few
more days. The team of doctors include epidemiologists and a microbiologist
from Australia, United Kingdom, Italy, India and Singapore. |
