Antonians
claw their way back
By Aubrey Kuruppu
A superb unbeaten fifty, under pressure, from Antonian
vice captain Sameera Weerabahu enabled his team to claw their way
back into the game and take a first innings lead over Trinity as
it faded into a listless draw in their 89th Big Match at Asgiriya
yesterday.
After
the home team had declared at their overnight score, the Antonians
were looking down the barrel at 28-4. At this stage Antonian skipper
Pramod Fernando stepped in and eased the pressure with a valuable
35. S. Munas, who kept him company, succumbed at 42 to a poor shot.
At
145-8, things looked break for the Katugastota school. But Weerabahu,
who showed great composure in difficult circumstances, together
with a defiant Peter Samarakone, saw them through to the lead. Fernando,
bowled a tight spell early morning, and Pathirana needed watching.
Munaweera, too, kept it tight. |
