Appointed
UNP organiser for Maharagama division
Irvin Weerackody, a communications veteran and a long time member
of the UNP's Working Committee, has been appointed by UNP leader
Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Colombo District as the party's chief
organizer for the Maharagama electoral division.
Weerackody,
has spearheaded several communications campaigns for the party since
1977, and played a key role in late President R. Premadasa's political
and national development campaigns, especially those focusing on
poverty alleviation and has done several public service assignments
during the last 15 years. Among them was his appointment by President
Premadasa to the Presidential Commission on NGOs headed by Justice
R.S Wanasundera, which inquired into their workings, including allegations
of anti-Buddhist activities and unethical conversions, especially
by those funded from abroad.
During
Ranil Wickremesinghe's tenure he was for a brief time the Chairman
of Pelwatte Sugar Company, an assignment he took up declining remuneration
and other perks, motivated by an interest in giving impetus to agricultural
activity in the Moneragala District. Weerackody is also a visiting
lecturer in writership and communications at the Sri Jayawardhanapura
University.
Meanwhile,
Colombo Mayor Prasanna Gunawardena has been appointed to Avissawella
and Bandula Gunawardena to Homagama, by the UNP High Command. |
