Trafficking:
closer tab on job agencies
By Chandani Kirinde
New legislation to prevent and combat women and child
trafficking for prostitution will empower the Government to keep
a closer tab on institutions involved in foreign employment in order
to prevent such trafficking in the guise of providing employment.
The
new laws will also empower the Foreign Minister who is due to present
the Bill to Parliament shortly to take steps to repatriate victims
of cross border trafficking and promote awareness by way of media
exposure to publicise the problem and its underlying causes, including
the projection of negative images of women.
Those
who will be considered violators under the Bill will include those
who keep, maintain or manage and knowingly finances or takes part
in the financing or lets or rents a building or any other place
for the trafficking of women and children for prostitution.
The
High Court will have exclusive jurisdiction to hear and punish such
offenders with sentences ranging from imprisonment of not less than
three years and not exceeding 15 years, as well as a fine. |
