Infighting
at Islamic Centre
The infighting within a Colombo-based Islamic organization engaged
in academic and welfare work has come into the open with one of
its officials complaining to the police that some officials who
have allegedly hijacked the administration had threatened him.
In
his complaint to the Wellawatte Police, Centre for Islamic Studies
(CIS) secretary Hameed Karim claimed he had highlighted some questionable
transactions of the Centre's former head who is alleged to have
forcibly taken over the administration at a time when foreign donations
were flowing into the country in the aftermath of the tsunami catastrophe.
Mr.
Karim said on March 22, when he went to the Centre, he was verbally
abused and asked to leave the premises, though he was still its
secretary. Mr. Karim told police he now feared for his life.
When
The Sunday Times contacted the CIS chairman M. Zarook denied these
allegations and said he had done no wrong. "These are false
allegations. If I am occupying this position by force people should
take action against me," he said. |
