Boys
home hit by water shortage
By Asif Fuard
The children of a boys' home in Maharagama have been
facing severe water shortages for the past few days and are being
severely inconvenienced.
The
Maharagama Boys' Home with around 30 inmates has eight toilets and
five washrooms and gets only a trickle of water during the mornings.
The boys have been forced to borrow water from neighbours.
In
an attempt at improvisation these boys have a bath in the rain.
The pots, pans, kitchen utensils and the boys clothes have been
piling up due to the lack of water to wash them.
The
boys who are aged between seven and sixteen end up in this boy's
home due to their being on probation or after being tried in a juvenile
court. It has been the duty for the five caretakers of this home
to provide for these children but they are helpless due to the water
problem they face.
The
Child Protection Society of Ceylon, which is one of Sri Lanka's
oldest NGOs, runs this home which was established in 1929. When
The Sunday Times spoke to the vice president of the society Chandra
De Silva he said these boys have been deprived of going to school
since they have no clean school uniforms.
"
These boys have been getting wet in the rain because they have no
water to have a wash. We are appealing to the Water Board to help
these boys," he said. |
