Anura warns of fate awaiting Alliance
Minister Anura Bandaranaike who was one of the main architects of the UPFA warned yesterday the Alliance would suffer the same fate that befell the UNP if the parties in the Alliance did not put aside their differences.

"We have to avoid going public with our criticism of each other. We can have differences but we can discuss them internally," he said. The minister was speaking at a news conference in Anuradhapura after several leading members of the Alliance headed by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse participated in religious activities at the Sri Maha Bodhi and at other places of worship.

"How can we work for the country when there are clashes between ourselves?" he asked. He said they should not live in a world of fantasy but face reality. He said that persons on both sides have said unnecessary things but more from his party had done so.

"Some deputy ministers seem to be competing with each other to give interviews to Sunday newspapers criticising the JVP. Can't they understand that if the JVP falls, the Government will fall too. Those going around in their posh vehicles will be left with only their bulath heppuwas, he said.

He said 75 per cent of the SLFP membership understood this but 25 per cent still had not. He said if they don't stop their feuding, people will chase them away saying you were given the power to rule and you haven't been able to do that.

However he said the UPFA had an advantage over the UNP as Ranil Wickremesinghe was a weak leader who has failed to make a single important speech in Parliament the whole of last year.

He said the main plank of the UNP now was getting S.B. Dissanayake out of prison which he said would never be realised. "The President will never pardon him," Mr. Bandaranaike said. He said he was confident the party will overcome the challenges in the coming year and achieve its objectives.

The minister had a word of advice for his sister - the President. He said she should keep friends as friends and not turns her friends into enemies.
