Little
translator Kaushala
By L.B. Senaratne
It was quite by chance that I met eleven-year-old
Jinanjalee Kaushala Karunaratne from St. Anthony's Girls' School
Kandy, when she came to present a detective story she had written
to the Governor of the Central Province Monty Gopallawa.
The
book is to be printed soon.
Kaushala has been writing and translating since she was nine years
old.
She has translated five books from the popular 'Enid Blyton' series
for children so far, the first " Five go to Camp' of which
is already published.
The
idea came to her after she watched the series on TV, she said. She
translated the books during her spare time and school holidays.
The second, third and fourth books are now awaiting publication.
It
was a struggle to find a publisher and this, she said took some
time, until her father intervened. Finally publisher Sarath Wijesooriya
gave her a helping hand.
Asked
why she had thought of translating the Enid Blyton series, she said
these books are popular among children of her age and she thought
children in the Sinhala stream should have the opportunity of enjoying
a good detective story. |
