Police
Unit to crack down on errant motorists
By Asif Fuard
Due to an alarming increase in traffic offences during
the festive season Traffic Police Headquarters has launched special
units to bring motor traffic offenders to book.
Recent
studies have shown that motor accidents claim the lives of at least
one person every four hours. As a result IGP Chandra Fernando, DIG
Traffic Gamini Silva and Traffic Police Headquarters Director SSP
Lucky Peries proposed the deployment of such units in accident prone
areas.
SSP
Peries said this operation will be in progress during festive seasons
such as the Avurudu, Vesak, Christmas. He said these units would
enable the Police to drastically reduce traffic offences.
"During
the last two weeks the Traffic Police Headquarters was able to detect
2,600 violations by motorists," he said. "We will not
only apprehend traffic rule violators but anyone carrying illegal
weapons, illicit liquor, drugs etc.," SSP Peries added.
"We
have planned a park and drive system to reduce traffic congestion
in the city. A motorist can park his vehicle in a public car park
and a bus will take him to his destination. This will improve road
safety and the flow of traffic. We are launching this project for
the first time in collaboration with the National Transport Commission
by December this year," he said. SSP Peries requested all road
users to be civic minded, courteous and to respect the rights of
others. |
