Now and forever, we will always
love you

Grandparents have a special place
in the hearts of grandchildren. In today's busy world where both
parents are often working, grandparents are often called upon to
help out in bringing up children. Having already gone through the
joys and challenges of bringing up their own children, they now
have to take on the responsibility once again with their grandchildren.
Sometimes
however, as time passes, things change and the grandparents, once
cherished by their grandchildren are forgotten. The Methodist College
Primary School, Colombo 3 celebrated Grandparents’ Day on
April 5 at the school auditorium. The programme began with the grandparents
being welcomed followed by several colourful dance items.
A
highlight of the programme was when the students took turns to thank
their grand- parents. The programme ended with a thank you song
sung in English, Tamil and Sinhala.
The
school's initiative was greatly appreciated by the grandparents
present that day. Mrs. P.N. Fernando, accompanied by Mr. Fernando
said they had come to see their five-year-old granddaughter in action
and had really enjoyed the programme.
"I
am very happy to participate in an event like this, which reminds
grandchildren about their grandparents. This assures us that they
do care for us," said Mr. M. D. Samarasekera, who has seven
grandchildren. He too was very happy to see one of his granddaughters
on stage.
Said
Mrs. Swarna Gunathunga, a primary teacher in Ragama, “Nowadays
grandchildren neglect the grandparents. Whatever we say, they don't
listen to us. This kind of programme will make them appreciate their
grandparents." She also felt it was a good example for other
schools.
"We
want children to appreciate their grandparents. This programme was
held in the past years with the senior students, but this time we
focused on the primary class, the Grade One children who are just
coming to the school," said Mrs. Shiranthi Perera, Head of
the Primary School. |
