Thomians shine on day one
By Shamseer Jaleel
Thomians led by national youth skipper Namal Rajapakse
one of the best in schools rugby this season, thrashed Prince of
Wales College Moratuwa 45-0 on the first day of the Inter-Schools
Sevens Rugby Tournament which was worked off at Longdon Place yesterday.
Forty eight teams took part and the event took place at Havelocks
Grounds as well. The matches got under way three hours late due
to a change in the venue from St Peter's College grounds in Bambalapitiya
to CR & FC at Longdon Place.
The
players were informed about the change of venue only in the morning
of the day of the contest. There was more drama as one of the players
from D S Senanayake College played under protest as he has already
represented one of the defence services teams earlier this year.
Thirteen
teams taking part in this tournament, organised by Western Province,
will figure in the All Island Sevens Tournament which will take
place on May 7 and 8 at the Royal College Rugby Grounds. Today the
matches will continue at the CR & FC and Havelocks SC commencing
from 8.00 am.
