Young
Dejan de Zoysa in sixth place
By M. Shamil Amit
Thomian schoolboy Dejan de Zoysa making his debut
in the international motor racing circuit did well to be placed
sixth in the overall standings after the completion of two rounds
of the 14 round 2005 Formula BMW Asia series held at the Bahrain
Formula One circuit.
De
Zoysa who is a member of the Minardi racing team competing for the
first time started off the track 1.8 seconds behind pole position
and according to information there was stiff opposition for the
youngster as most of the drivers was in the same timing. But Dejan
who was the top driver of the Minardi Team Asia showed tremendous
consistency to achieve this overall standing.
He
would have gained a better placing if not for the two mistakes he
made after having got ahead at the start of both the races to move
five places forward from the tenth position.
Four
drivers represented the Minardi Asia Team but the Bahranians held
sway at their home circuit by clinching four podium positions in
the two rounds. S. AL. Kahlifa from the home team secured the lead
with Robert T. Boughey and Charlie Ro Charlez taking the second
and third places respectively.
With
12 more rounds to complete the championship, young Dejans next two
events are in Sepang, Malaysia on May 15 and16. The other race venues
are Thailand, Japan, Korea, Australia and China. The Formula BMW
Asia series is the stepping stone to all Formula One aspirants which
holds championships in USA, Europe and the United Kingdom and a
keen tussle for a berth to qualify for this could be seen in the
days to come. |
