Improving
SLT's international and Internet communications
The
latest optical fibre submarine cable system - South East Asia-Middle
East-West Europe 4 (SEA-ME-WE 4) was installed on April 10 at the
Galle Face Green. Divers installed the cable in deep sea from a
ship anchored offshore while Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) engineers supervised
the operation.
The
cable starts from Singapore and ends in France and is 20,000 kilometres
in length. It has 16 international administrations, which include
Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan,
United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria
and France.
SLT
has invested in this new cable, which will benefit and improve both
international communications and Internet. The bandwidth will be
increased with this new cable and Internet costs will be reduced
as well. Before this new cable was installed, Sri Lanka had SEA-ME-WE
2 and SEA-ME-WE 3. |
