Right
of reply: That Volvo was not a luxury car
Referring to The Sunday Times Page 6 box story titled 'CPC Chief
calls for use of small vehicles' published last week along with
photographs, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Chairman Jaliya Medagama
says:
"The
photograph, which appeared under the above news item and is captioned
to say 'CPC Chairman Jaliya Medagama (in front in light blue shirt)
getting into a luxury Volvo after the meeting….' gives a wrong
impression to the reader that the chairman while stressing the need
of utilizing small vehicles for fuel efficiency is using luxury
vehicle in contrary to what the chairman has been stressing at the
press conference held at the Ministry of Power and Energy on April
11.
"The
pictured Volvo is the assigned vehicle for the chairperson of the
Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and which has been used by my two predecessors
since it was procured in 2001. Further, when I assumed duties as
the Chairman of the CPC on April 8, 2004, I decided not to use the
Volvo vehicle due to the high fuel and maintenance costs and instead
of it I have been using a 1300 engine capacity small vehicle bearing
number HP 2115.
“The
Volvo was given to the CPC vehicle pool and it had been used occasionally
by the Deputy Minister and other senior officials of CPC. "As
my regular car was out of commission I had to borrow the above vehicle
for my official work since April 4, 2005 and it so happened I had
attended the press conference in the same vehicle.
"Also
I would like to stress that since I assumed duties as the chairman
(for the last 368 days) I have used this Volvo vehicle for not more
than 10 days. Therefore you will appreciate the fact that the CPC
chairman does not use the above so-called luxury vehicles as his
regular official vehicle and that the impression the writer intended
to create amongst the reader is unfair. Further, I also would like
to stress that this Volvo vehicle is not a luxury one and it is
an S-40 (small vehicle).
"I
hope I have corrected the wrong impression created by you in the
newspaper and that you would publish my explanation in the same
manner that you had given publicity to the above news item in your
newspaper." |
