Public
Trustee's Dept. not cooperating:Probe head
The Chairman of a Ministerial Committee to probe the affairs of
the Public Trustee's Department has complained that the Department
is not co-operating in the probe.
Retired
Judge G.M.S. Samaraweera, who heads a three-member committee told
The Sunday Times that the Public Trustee's Department had not sent
some documentation requested by the committee " several weeks
back ". Space required at the Department to conduct its proceedings
has also not been given, he said.
The
committee has also found that the newspaper advertisement placed
by the Public Trustee's Department on behalf of the committee calling
for public petitions did not contain the full address of where the
petitions were to be sent. The Public Trustee oversees a large amount
of Trusts, especially those of Buddhist viharas, Hindu kovils, churches
and other Trusts established by leading citizens who had entrusted
their wealth to him for the public benefit.
When
contacted by The Sunday Times Buddha Sasana Ministry Secretary D.W.
Abeywickrama said he was not aware how some advertisements calling
for public petitions carried the full address, and others did not.
