Mixed
results for Lankan stalwarts
The two Sri Lankan stalwarts who had their opening stints with English
counties this week ended up with mixed results. Chaminda Vaas turning
out for Worcestershire shone with both bat and ball in his first
appearance for the county this season.
Though
Worcestershire lost the game by seven wickets to Durham, Vaas ended
the game with a note worthy performance. In the Worcester first
innings (182) Vaas made 26 runs and then finished Durham innings
with figures of 3 for 65 off 26 overs with Durham making 286 runs
in their first innings.
Batting
for the second time Worcester crashed to 146 all out with England
fast bowler Steve Harmison grabbing 5 for 61 including a hat-trick.
The only batsman to show any resistance to Harmison was Vaas who
top scored for his adopted team with 42 not out in 32 balls with
a six and a four. Worcester scored the required 32 runs for the
loss of 3 wickets, but Vaas did not bowl in the short innings.
Sanath
Jayasuriya may want to forget his first inning the county circuit.
Appearing for Somerset at Headingley for the first time the Lankan
opener lasted only three balls and also failed to score falling
prey to the other England fast bowler Mathew Hoggard. In reply to
Yorkshire first innings total of 501(Jayasuriya 7-0-27-0) Somerset
were 182 for 9 in 48.5 overs. After being asked to follow on Somerset
were still trailing Yorkshire by 210 runs at 109 for 4. Batting
for the second time Jayasuriya managed only seven runs this time
falling to the other fast bowler G.J. Kruis. |
