Govt.
will not accept conditions at Development Forum
The government will not accept any unfavourable conditions in return
for aid pledges at the Development Forum to be held in Kandy this
month, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr P. B. Jayasundera said last
week.
"We're
not making any promises," he told a news conference on the
Development Forum to be held on May 16-17. "The government
will not agree to impossible conditionalities for the sake of money."
But,
he said, donors naturally prefer borrowing countries to adopt practical
ways of generating economic returns and to ensure that there are
no budgetary risks in spending patterns.
The
forum will focus on post-tsunami reconstruction work and the government's
new high growth, poverty reduction strategy outlined in the 2005
budget. |
