No
Clinton for tsunami summit in Kandy
NEW YORK - Former US President Bill Clinton, who was expected to
participate in a major donor conference for tsunami reconstruction
scheduled to take place in Kandy this month, is unlikely to attend
the meeting.
The
UN Special Envoy for tsunami Recovery, Mr. Clinton has informed
the Sri Lanka Mission to the UN that he might be forced to skip
the meeting for medical reasons. Mr. Clinton, who is recovering
from heart surgery, will be represented by one of his senior aides,
Erskine Bowles.
Meanwhile,
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday called on the Government
to hold the donor conference in the coastal city of Galle, one of
the areas battered by the devastating tsunami. Touring the southern
coastal belt during the week, Mr. Wickramasinghe said Galle was
a more appropriate venue to hold the conference. |
