Moragoda
going to President for SB's release
Former Minister Milinda Moragoda is to meet President Chandrika
Kumaratunga tomorrow or within days to secure the release of ex-cabinet
colleague S. B. Dissanayake who is serving a two-year jail term
for contempt of court.
Gamini
Godakanda, spokesman for Mr. Moragoda's office, said moves were
under way for the meeting with the President, but did not give a
date. Asked whether speculation that Mr. Dissanayake was prepared
to tender an apology in return for a Presidential pardon was correct,
Mr. Godakanda said he did not know the details of Mr. Moragoda's
discussion with Mr. Dissanayake in jail.
Mr.
Dissanayake's wife, Tamara, said Mr. Moragoda had discussed the
matter with her husband who had served five months of his two-year
jail term. She said Mr. Moragoda had conveyed this decision to the
party leadership and approval had been granted for the meeting with
the President.
The
UNP's working Committee earlier discussed plans to secure the release
of Mr. Dissanayke. Moves to appeal for the release of Mr. Dissanayake
came amidst a campaign in the Colombo city with slogans appearing
on walls and roads on Friday night saying, "Release SB immediately". |
