UN
Secy. Gen. post: No decision yet, says China
The Chinese government has not made up its mind on whom it would
support as the next UN Secretary General despite previous reports
originating from Thailand and Malaysia that China has expressed
its clear stance to support Thai Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart
Sathirathai for the post, a Chinese embassy spokesperson told The
Sunday Times.
"We
will take into consideration the role played by Sri Lanka when we
take our decision", the spokesperson said. She was reacting
to a Malaysian News Agency Bernama report which quoted a Thai News
Agency report saying China had clearly expressed its stance to support
the Thai Deputy premier for the top UN post.
"But,
it is clear that it will be definitely supporting a candidate from
Asia", she added. The earlier news report said that Beijing
had made its stand known at the ASEAN ministerial meeting held in
Kyoto, Japan on May 6 on the sidelines of the seventh Asia-Europe
Foreign Minister's meeting.
Head
of Sri Lanka's Government Peace Secretariat and former UN Under
Secretary General Jayantha Dhanapala is Sri Lanka's nominee for
the Secretary General’s post. |
