Confusion
over Lal Kantha's trade union role
The JVP has made changes at the top in its powerful trade union
movement but there are conflicting claims as to why it was done.
Firebrand minister K. D. Lal Kantha and deputy minister S. Amarasinghe
who led the trade union movement in a recent showdown over the restructuring
of the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation
have reportedly been replaced by parliamentarians Piyasiri Wijenayake
              and Wasantha Amerasinghe.
             Some
observers said the change in the leadership marked the softening
of the JVP's stand on the restructuring dispute. But some JVP sources
said Minister Lalkantha was subjected to the principles of collective
responsibility in the cabinet and the change in the TU leadership
was intended to avoid such conflicts.
            Adding
to the confusion, Mr. Lalkantha told The Sunday Times yesterday
he was holding the same post and had not been relieved of any responsibilities
as president of the Samastha Lanka Vurthiya Sevaka Sangamaya. |
