Road
to vihara to be repaired by Poson
By Athula Bandara
The Road Development Authority (RDA) will ensure that the repair
work on the Anuradhapura-Vilachchiya main road leading to Tantrimale
Vihara is to be completed before the Poson poya.
This
is a sequel to the request made to the Prime Minister by the viharadhipathi
and the Buddhist residents of the area that the road work be completed
before Poson, an RDA source said.
Thousands
of devotees visit this historic vihare for the Poson festival. As
the road to the vihara is in a bad condition, vehicles find it difficult
to travel on it. This was told the Prime Minister, who is also the
Highways Minister, by the viharadhipathi Ven. Tantrimale Chandarathana
Thero who is the deputy Sanghanayake of the North-East division.
The
length of the Anuradhapura - Villachchiya road leading to the Tantrimale
vihare is 17 kms of which only 3 kms had been repaired earlier by
the provincial roads department under a foreign aid project.
Residents
say that taking a patient to the Anuradhapura General Hospital from
this area is a hazardous job and there have been two or three incidents
where patients stung by reptiles have died on the way while being
transported to Anurahapura from the Tantrimale hospital. |
