UNP
beats JVP in Kelaniya science faculty poll
The UNP-backed student union won the elections in the science faculty
of the University of Kelaniya on Thursday, beating the JVP-backed
union by a majority of over 600 votes, university sources said.
The
UNP-backed Shishya Padanama which campaigned on a platform of anti-ragging
obtained 825 votes as against 218 votes received by the JVP-backed
Vidyapeeta Kriyakari Kamituwa.
In
four other faculties -- Commerce and Management, Humanities, Social
Science and Medical -- candidates of the Joint Students Front backed
by the JVP were elected uncontested after the UNP-backed union pulled
out of the contest.
UNP
student union leaders said they pulled out of the contest due to
threats, but the JVP student union leaders claimed the UNP union
did not have candidates to field. |
