Some state sectors yet to receive pay increase of Rs.2500
By Sachitra Mahendra.
The recent increase of Rs. 2500 in salaries, recommended in the Budget, has sparked controversy in some institutions, as the heads of these respective organisations have failed to effect the increase.

The engineering, health, and bus transport sectors have run into crises due to the failure to pay the increase. State Engineering Corporation (SEC) employees claimed they were paid the additional Rs. 2500 only in December and March, but thereafter had not been paid.

"This is the first time our salaries have not been increased as recommended. We have requested this increase be given as an allowance till the matter is resolved," Hemapala Hettiarachchi, an SEC trade unionist told The Sunday Times.

The Sunday Times learns that SEC has not obtained Rs. 320 million due from other state institutions. A number of SEC employees recently locked up the chairman in his room on the Rs. 2500 issue.

Meanwhile, The Government Nursing Officials Association of the North Western Province is to launch a strike on the Rs. 2500 issue, which is already given as an allowance.

"We have this problem only in the North Western and North-East provincial councils. In other provincial councils, the Rs. 2500 has already been added to the salaries," Association president Saman Ratnapriya said.

When contacted, an official of the North Western Provincial Council Health Department told The Sunday Times no direct approval for the payment has been received either from the Finance Ministry or the Treasury.

The strike is scheduled to take place on May 25 in the North Western province, while on May 26 and 27 the association will join hands with the other health officers, exempting graduate medical practitioners in both the North Western and North-East provinces.

Cluster bus company employees are also to take stern action unless government grants the Rs. 2500 increase. The employees have been paid only Rs. 1000 added to the salary from December 2004. It is reported that 40,000 employees have not been paid the outstanding Rs. 1500.
