Colombo schools dominate

The Colombo schools dominated the third day's proceedings at the 16th All Island Inter-school Under 15 hockey tournament played at the Astro Turf grounds in Reid avenue yesterday. Three of the four teams St Benedict's, Ananda, Nalanda that played in the quarterfinals succeeded in advancing to the semi-finals while the other team to qualify was Christ Church College Matale.

In the girl's category both the Colombo schools Yasodhara BMV and Vishaka Vidyalaya who booked a berth in the quarterfinals succeeded in entering the semi-finals at the expense of St Anthony's Katugastota and Christ Church College Matale while the other two semi finalists were both from Kandy. Defending champions Seethadevi Balika and Pushpadana Balika.

In the boy's category St Benedict's who had a fine record in their preliminary games where they chalked up wins against Dharmadutha College, Badulla 8-0, Richmond College 3-1 and Vidyartha College 4-0 continued their good form when they outclassed Vijaya College Matale by four goals to one in a quarterfinal encounter to maintain their unbeaten record.

Ananda too ended up unbeaten when they defeated St Thomas Matale by two goals to nil in their quarterfinal match having earlier overcome Zahira Matale, Dharmaraja and Mahinda Galle. In the third quarterfinal of the day Christ Church Matale recorded a hard fought 3-2 win over the gallant Isipathana side to become the only outstation team to enter the semi final. In the last quarterfinal of the boy's category Nalanda outclassed Dharmaraja 4-1.

In the girl's category defending champions Seethadevi Balika overcame Museaus College 2-0. The quarterfinal encounter between Yasodara Balika and St Anthony's Katugastota ended in a nil all draw before Yasodara winning the game on penalty strokes by 4-2. It was the same fate in the encounter between Pushpadana Balika and Vijeya College Matale with Pushpdana winning 2-1. In the last quarterfinal Vishaka Vidyalaya outclassed Christ Church by seven goals to nil.

The semi final will be played at 7.00 a.m. today with St Benedict's locking horns against Ananda and Christ Church Matale meeting Nalanda while in the girl's category Seethadevi Balika will meet Yasodara Balika and Pushpdana Balika will fight out with Vishaka Vidyalaya. The girl's final will be played at 3.00 p.m. followed by the boy's final at 4.00 p.m.
