Alleged
neglect by CMC: Old Moor St. traders protest
By Dhanuusha Pathirana
Traders in Old Moor Street are protesting and refusing to pay vehicle
parking fees to the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), charging that
the road is neglected and other basic facilities not provided.
Traders
Association Chief K. Palaniandy said other streets were being repaired
but Old Moor Street was neglected apparently because it was not
a vote-getting residential area. He said it was impossible for them
to continue their businesses since rainwater came into their shops,
contaminating items like rice and dhal.
He
said water and sewage lines were also damaged and garbage was not
collected making the traders vulnerable to diseases. Mr. Palaniyandi
said there were about 150 shops on Old Moor Street and each paid
about Rs. 60,000 as taxes to the CMC every year but they were getting
a dirty deal from the council.
He
said even the few repairs carried out by the CMC were largely patch
work. Deputy Mayor Azath Salley in response said the traders had
built unauthorised structures blocking the drainage system."
He
said the water lines needed to be renovated and the Water Board
also must come in for the job. CMC Superintendent Engineer Mohamed
Fazal said small repairs had been done up to now and complete renovation
work would start next month. |
