Journalism
for GCE O/L
Journalism is to be be introduced at the GCE Ordinary Level examination
from January 2006 as an additional subject together with Information
Technology. The course titled 'Communication and Media Studies'
can be followed in the Sinhala, Tamil or English mediums.
The
course covers public relations, development of practical skills,
communication skills and interpersonal relationship needed in various
career programmes. Bandula Dayaratne, programme co-ordinator, National
Institute of Education (NIE) said the syllabus for the GCE Advanced
Level exam is being drafted and hopefully could be introduced to
the 2006 batch in May.
"We
have the drafts, but they are in the revision stage. We hope to
finish drafting by January," he said. According to Mr. Dayaratne,
the A/L syllabus is also targeted at students who do not gain admission
to universities. "It will help them develop their communication
abilities. The syllabus also focuses on how to make a candidate
aware of employment mannerisms." He added.
The
editorial board for the GCE A/L journalism course is comprised of
lecturers from the Mass Communication departments of Kelaniya and
Jayawardhanapura universities. |
