Cup boxing meet
First trial for South Asian
Games

The Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka will conduct its first
major boxing meet for the year 2005 with the Layton Cup Boxing Meet
due to be held from June 1 to 4 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium
commencing at 5.30 p.m. each day.
This
meet will also be the first selection trials to pick a pool of 24
boxers for the forthcoming South Asian Games. The selected 24 boxers
will be pruned down after the major boxing meet and trials that
will follow thereafter before the final team is selected.
The
ABA are looking forward to have a seed ranking for the selected
boxers depending on their performances thus giving all boxers a
fair chance of performing and to show their talent. The selection
committee will also give the boxers every possible chance irrespective
of winning or losing in selecting the potential boxers.
The
eligible boxers participating in the Layton Cup are between 17 to
34 years, should be a winner of the Stubbs Shield, Junior Nationals
or Winner or Runner up at the ABA organized Novices or Intermediate
boxing meets.
A
close tussle is expected with boxers from Slimline BC who are fielding
top boxers, Army, Air Force, Navy, Police, Veyangoda BC, Vidyarathana
BC Horana, Vidyartha BC Kandy, Nugegoda BC and Unichela BC fighting
for honours. Events will be held in the under 48, 51, 54, 57, 60,
64, 69, 75, 81, 91 and over 91kgs. Last year Army BC's H.P. Jayantha
Kumara who won in the Fly Weight category clinched the Layton Cup.
The chief guest at the closing ceremony will be Kishu Gomes, CEO,
Caltex Lubricants. |
