Just stay tuned
By Ishani Ranasinghe
As this week comes to an end, the choir of Bishop’s College will spice up your Friday and Saturday evening to bring to you… Stay Tuned. Last week we got some insight on the show was all about… for this week we once again spoke to the director Ruwani Seimon to find out a few highlights of the show.

“We will be having six solo performers at the show,” she says starting to tell us about them. With over twenty students auditioning for the six solo slots that were up for grabs, the choristers were judged by outsiders making the selection process very upfront. This also indicates that the performances of these soloists will definitely be something worth watching.

Six solo artistes… what can be expected from them? We found out. Safra Deen and Amanda Gunathilake are known for the singing capabilities when it comes to pop music. “They have won competitions and I thought they needed to change the style of music they are used to singing,” says Ruwani adding that this is why she decided to get them to sing jazz and give them a bit of a challenge. “They are quite experienced and they are doing a good job at taking on the task.”

Bringing a bit of Broadway into the evening are Rochelle Kelly and Dimitri Gunathilake who will be singing two numbers from two of well-loved musicals. First time on stage as solo artiste will be Rajindra Amarasinghe and Vindya Fernando who have decided to share the solo. “They were a bit nervous being on stage all alone so they opted to share it with each other,” says Ruwani explaining that they will be singing two inspirational songs one of which will be “When You Believe.”

Speaking about the selections of the songs, she adds that it was more or less the soloist’s choice, “I just gave them a guideline as to what kind of song they have to choose.” The guidelines that were given were based on how much work was needed to be put in and what these youngsters could handle. Because of the experience the levels of what they could do on stage differs, while Amanda and Safra will also be dancing as part of their performances, the other four will be doing something different. “They have chosen songs that need to be dramatised and in the case of the first timers singing inspirational songs mean that there is less dramatisation involved making it easier for them.”

It has taken them months and months of hard work, “and a lot of setbacks that nearly saw the show being cancelled a few times.” But they have remained committed and have had a blast along the way. The fact that they will be putting on a brilliant show is something that cannot be doubted… what with all the hard work they have put into this they have something to prove. For the participants it has been a blast and they promise it to be one extravagant evening… so for those of you who are interested this will definitely be one concert you should think about going for.

The choir of Bishop’s College will bring you Stay Tuned on June 10 and 11 at the Bishop’s College auditorium. The main sponsor for the event is Shanki Dandeniya and the co-sponsor is Lever Brothers.
