on killing of four jumbos
By Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe
Police are probing the involvement of a government
politician in the gruesome killing of four elephants inside the
Wilpattu National Park.
On
the instructions of Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando
a special team has been deployed along with CID and wild life officers
to find whether there are more carcasses of elephants killed by
a group which had been sent by the politician to clear the road
up to St. Anthony's Church, (known as 'Kela palliya') at Pallekanda
in Pomparippu.
The
mother elephant (aged 20) and two calves of around 6 and 8 months
were found earlier, while the body of another she elephant between
8 and 12 years of age was found 15 metres away later. Wilpattu wild
life officials said the elephants had died out of gunshot injuries
received roughly ten days ago and added they are looking out for
more elephants killed or wounded. |
