Infant
finger cutting incident: nurse to appear in court
By Apsara Kapukotuwa
A junior nurse, who had just completed her probation period of 10
months, had been interdicted pending further inquiries into an alleged
incident of medical negligence while attending to an infant at the
De Soyza maternity hospital.
Four
lady doctors attached to the Premature Birth Unit of the hospital
too had given affidavits following a complaint lodged by parents
that one doctor had made a derogatory statement about the incident.
According
to the complaint lodged with the Borella police by the parents of
the baby girl, the nurse in question had cut off the tip of the
little finger of a 5-day-old infant's left hand while cutting off
a plaster.
Even
though the infant was rushed to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for remedial
treatment, the specialist paediatrician had been unable to re-attach
the part of the finger that was cut off due to extensive damage
to the nerves and blood vessels.
Colombo
Additional Magistrate Mohammed Irshadeen had ordered that notice
be served on the nurse to appear in court on October 4. |
