TNA
gives ultimatum for statue removal
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has given the Government an ultimatum
to remove the Buddha statue in the Trincomalee town. The TNA has
set June 15 as the last date for its removal.
"If
the statue is not removed by this date then we will continue our
protest campaign," said TNA Parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah.
Minister Maithripala Sirisena who visited the area on Wednesday
held discussions with TNA members as well as other Tamil representatives
from Trincomalee. The minister had given an assurance that the additional
troops deployed in the city would be removed with immediate effect.
Mr.
Senathirajah told The Sunday Times that the troops had not yet been
removed. Meanwhile, two incidents were reported as a result of last
Friday's hartal in the North and East. Firstly, a grenade was detonated
near the Anuradhapura junction in the town, injuring two people.
Later that evening a lorry was burnt in the same vicinity.
