Jumbo killings: Cover-up over whodunnit?
Despite fresh evidence emerging that security personnel of Christian
Affairs Minister Milroy Fernando were present in the location around
the same time when a she elephant and three calves were shot dead
in the Wilpattu Wildlife Sanctuary, they are yet to be questioned,
The Sunday Times learns.
These
elephants had been shot with T 56 weapons and this gruesome killing
is reportedly the highest number of elephants killed in a single
incident. Residents in the area say that a group of security personnel
had been in the same vicinity, clearing up the area surrounding
a rundown church known as Kele Palliya.
They
were reportedly preparing for an upcoming church feast. However
The Sunday Times learns that the CID team probing the incident has
not yet questioned the Minister or his security personnel. Meanwhile
Deputy Director of Wildlife, S. Fernando declined to comment on
the progress of the investigation.
"We
cannot comment on the ongoing investigations since it might obstruct
the process. The Wildlife Department too is conducting its own investigations
and I cannot comment on that either. We also do not know whether
a Minister was involved," Mr. Fernando said. |
