Plea
for good and fair journalists
The first graduation ceremony of the Sri Lanka College of Journalism
(SLCJ) was held last Monday at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
UN Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, Miguel Bermeo was the chief
guest.
"During
the period of the tsunami, the need for good journalism was indispensable.
The social responsibly of journalists is not to sensationalize the
story or point fingers at others. Proper reporting reminds us of
accountability. Sri Lanka needs good and fair journalists"
said Mr. Bermeo
The
College was set up by the Editors' Guild, The Newspaper Society
of Sri Lanka, the Free Media Movement, and is working in close partnership
with the Swedish journalism institute Fojo under the Sri Lanka Press
Institute.
Speaking
at the awards ceremony, Fojo Representative in Sri Lanka, Johan
Romare said the essence of journalism is to tell good stories. "It's
not our own story, about stories of others. Some journalists are
better than the others in telling good stories. What makes them
better is hard work. It's hard work to double check, to maintain
sources and to rewrite the story you have written once. Apart from
the hard work, you need to have good analytical skills to be a good
journalist" said Mr. Romare.
Twenty
students out of the 24 students who successfully completed the one-year
diploma course were present and received their certificates. Chamika
Janakantha received the Best Student Award in the Sinhala medium,
Thavayoganathan Sajitharan the award in the Tamil medium and Amali
Dinushika Dissanayake the award in the English medium.
The
present director of SLCJ, Dr. Uvais Ahmed said he was happy to see
most of the diploma-graduating students already busy practicing
their profession at many reputed newspaper institutions. "They
are successfully facing the challenges of journalism. The College
is proud of them" he said. |
