Death
of Mackwoods Chairperson
Sriyani Nonis, chairperson of the Mackwoods group of companies died
early last week and her funeral is to be held today following the
arrival of her family from abroad.
The
company is one of the oldest in the island being established in
1841 and has the distinction of being the second business concern
to be a member of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in 1847.
There
was no immediate word on who would succeed Ms Nonis. There was speculation
that her daughter, Nirmali Samaratunga, who is on the board and
also chairperson of the National Chamber of Commerce, would be the
successor.
Ms
Nonis’ father, N.S.O. Mendis, was at the helm of the company
for a long time having taken over in 1956. Her brother, Ricky Mendis
is chairman of the Delmege Group of Companies.

the Mackwoods Group is a conglomerate of several companies engaged
In diverse activities such as health care, agribusiness, manufacturing,
plantation management, import and export trading, travel and tourism
