Tsunami
panic in south
Wild rumours of another tsunami set off panic among residents in
the southern coastal areas, prompting the Meteorological department
to issue an announcement that there was no fear of a tsunami.
Officials
at the Met. department and the Geological and Mines Survey Bureau
said they received scores of telephone calls, inquiring about the
possible tsunami. Telephone lines in the south were also congested
with panic-stricken people trying to contact relatives.
State
geologist S. J. Kalubanda said the people might have got into a
panic after seeing high tidal waves. Matara Police Emergency Unit
said that people in the Kottegoda area had seen rising waves for
about 15 minutes. |
